Google’s Gemini App Gets Major Upgrades—Here’s What’s New

Gemini app upgrades.

Google is rolling out big updates to its Gemini app, making it smarter, more personal, and easier to use. These new features for March 2025 are now available for users to try at no cost.

Gemini’s experimental AI model, called 2.0 Flash Thinking, is getting a major upgrade it said on Thursday. It now supports file uploads and offers a longer context window, meaning it can analyze and understand more information at once. For advanced users, the context window now handles up to 1 million tokens, helping solve more complex problems faster.

The Deep Research feature, which acts as a personal AI research assistant can now search the web, analyze information, and produce detailed reports more efficiently. Gemini now shows its thought process in real-time. Deep Research is now available in over 45 languages and can be tried a few times per month for free. Advanced users get expanded access.

Gemini is becoming more personal with a new personalization feature. By connecting with Google apps, first starting with Search, Gemini can tailor responses based on your preferences. For example, it can suggest restaurants based on your past searches or give travel advice based on places you’ve looked up.

Gemini is also improving how it works with other Google apps like Calendar, Notes, Tasks, and Photos. With the new AI model, Gemini can better handle complex tasks involving multiple apps. For example, you could ask Gemini to find a cookie recipe on YouTube, add the ingredients to your shopping list, and locate nearby open grocery stores—all in one prompt. Now that’s pretty helpful.

Soon, Gemini will also connect with Google Photos, allowing it to create travel itineraries based on your pictures or remind you of important details, like when your driver’s license expires (this is totally underrated as a feature).

A new feature called Gems lets users create custom AI experiences. You can build your own AI expert for specific tasks, like meal planning or math coaching. Just name your Gem, give it instructions, and upload relevant files if needed. Then, chat with it anytime. Gems are now rolling out for free to all users.

All the new features can also be tested out today over at gemini.google.com. Another day, and more generative AI features continue to improve.
