Telus is launching Canada’s first Sovereign AI Factory in partnership with NVIDIA, creating a high-speed, secure AI computing hub for businesses and researchers.

Sovereign means the AI infrastructure is controlled and secured locally. This means that sensitive data and AI advancements are not reliant on foreign companies or governments.

The first facility will open in Quebec by summer 2025, with expansion planned for British Columbia. This project aims to reduce reliance on foreign AI infrastructure while keeping Canadian data secure.

“Canada has made AI a national priority, investing in talent, research and commercialization. The Telus Sovereign AI Factory now provides the infrastructure for this innovation to scale, empowering Canadian businesses, startups and researchers with access to cutting-edge AI infrastructure to turn their bold ideas into real-world breakthroughs — and now, they don’t have to look beyond our borders to get it,” said Hesham Fahmy, Chief Information Officer at Telus, in a statement to iPhone in Canada.

Powered by 99% renewable energy, the AI Factory will feature NVIDIA’s latest Hopper- and Blackwell- based supercomputers, allowing companies to train and refine AI models faster and more efficiently. Telus says its ultra-fast fibre-optic network and energy-efficient data centres will make this one of the most sustainable AI facilities in the world.

Telus says it is now the first North American Service Provider to become an official NVIDIA Cloud Partner as well. The company didn’t disclose how much it will spend on this AI factory, though.
