Apple is testing a new iPad Pro powered by its next-gen M5 chip, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Sunday PowerOn newsletter.
The updated iPad Pro models, which are reportedly codenamed J817, J818, J820, and J821, are in advanced testing and expected to enter production in the second half of 2025.
If all goes as planned, the iPad Pro would be among the first Apple devices to run the M5 chip. Gurman says Apple is also starting early development of M6-powered iPads with in-house cellular modems, which could debut as late as 2027.
This news follows Apple’s recent refresh of the M3 iPad Air and entry-level iPad, but the iPad Pro was left out after its redesign and M4 upgrade last May.
A smaller update for the base-model iPad is also in the pipeline, focused mostly on a processor bump. Maybe Apple Intelligence support will finally arrive?
Gurman also reports that the MacBook Pro is set to receive the M5 chip later this year, following the same fall timeline as previous updates. Apple is also developing an M5 version of the MacBook Air (the M4 MacBook Air launched earlier this month).
No major design changes are expected for the MacBook Pro until 2026, when Apple is expected to roll out the M6 version.
