Apple Relaunches AirPods Max Firmware Following iOS 18.4 Bug

Apple has relaunched its firmware supporting lossless audio on the USB-C AirPods Max. Previously, the company attempted to roll out support for the audio feature but was met with an expected bug affecting users’ ability to install the update.
The company has re-launched the AirPods Max lossless audio firmware this week. A new ‘7E101’ build is available, supporting the USB-C AirPods Max. Apple attempted to release build ‘7E99’ alongside iOS 18.4. However, users began facing an issue where the AirPods Max failed when trying to install the update. Users attempting to install firmware 7E99 were unable to access lossless audio over a USB-C connection.
On a support page, Apple states that firmware 7E101 is not available. The company urges users to update their iPhone, iPad, or Mac to the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS and ensure Bluetooth is turned on prior to attempting to install the latest update. Apple confirms that firmware 7E101 enables “lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio for the ultimate listening experience.” You can confirm which firmware version your AirPods Max is running by navigating to the ‘Settings’ menu on iOS and taking a look at the ‘AirPods’ menu.
It’s worth pointing out that lossless audio is only available to AirPods Max headphones using USB-C connectivity. Older models running Lightning will not have access to lossless audio.
With lossless audio, users will be able to gain a more immersive sound experience while listening to music, watching videos, and playing games. Lossless audio supports a high-resolution at 24-bit/48 kHz sound quality. With lossless audio support, users of Logic Pro or other creation apps will be able to make music in Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking.
