$91 Million Showdown: Videotron Sues Rogers Over Freedom Deal
Videotron is taking Rogers to court, claiming the telecom giant broke a contract tied to the 2022 sale of Freedom Mobile.
In a notice of action filed April 3 in Ontario Superior Court, Videotron is asking for $91 million in damages and wants Rogers to follow through on what it says were agreed-upon obligations under the deal, reports the Canadian Press.
The sale was part of a larger $26-billion merger between Rogers and Shaw. To address competition concerns, Shaw sold Freedom Mobile to Videotron, a Quebecor subsidiary, for $2.85 billion. Both deals got final regulatory approval in March 2023.
Videotron’s filing didn’t explain how Rogers allegedly broke the contract. A notice of action is a formal step to start a civil lawsuit. Videotron must now file a full statement of claim within 30 days.
