Apple Hits 60% Emissions Cut, Adds Earth Day Discount for Recyclers

Ahead of Earth Day (April 22), Apple says it has reduced its global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% since 2015—part of its broader goal to go fully carbon neutral across its business by 2030.
In its latest Environmental Progress Report, Apple shared that it’s using more clean energy, more recycled materials, and cutting emissions across its supply chain, products, and operations. For example, the company now uses 99% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and 99% recycled cobalt in all batteries for Apple-designed products.
“Today, we’re using more clean energy and recycled materials to make our products than ever before, we’re preserving water and preventing waste around the world, and we’re investing big in nature. As we get closer to 2030, the work gets even harder — and we’re meeting the challenge with innovation, collaboration, and urgency,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives in a statement on Wednesday.
Here are some highlights from Apple’s Environmental Progress Report:
- 17.8 gigawatts of renewable energy now power Apple’s global supply chain.
- 26 semiconductor suppliers have committed to reducing 90% of high-impact industrial gases by 2030.
- Apple’s suppliers redirected 600,000 metric tons of waste from landfills in 2024 alone.
- The new MacBook Air is now made with 55% recycled content—a record for any Apple product.
- Over 90 billion gallons of water have been saved since Apple’s Supplier Clean Water Program began.
Now through May 16, Apple customers can bring in old devices to Apple Stores to recycle and get 10% off a new Apple accessory. The fine print says, “offer available to customers who recycle an eligible device and purchase a new eligible accessory in the same transaction between April 16, 2025, and May 16, 2025.” The company doesn’t state what an eligible device is so you’ll have to ask in store (likely an older or vintage Apple product).
On April 22, Apple Watch users can earn a special Earth Day badge by completing a 30-minute workout. Fitness+ will also feature outdoor-focused workouts and meditations, including a new Time to Walk episode with actress and climate advocate Shailene Woodley.
Apple TV+ is promoting Earth-themed content under “The Future Is Up to Us,” including documentaries like Jane, Tiny World, and Prehistoric Planet. The Tips app on iPhone also now includes an Earth Day section to help users explore eco-friendly features like offline Maps, energy-saving tips, and plant identification.
Typically on Earth Day, select Apple Store logos turn green and that will likely happen again.
