Rogers Expands 5G Service to More Toronto Subway Tunnels

Rogers has started turning on cellphone service in new parts of Toronto’s subway system.

Riders can now get a signal between Kipling and Islington stations, and between Keele and Dundas West stations. This is the first step in Rogers’ plan to bring 5G coverage — and access to 911 — to the remaining underground tunnels.

Rogers says it’s working with the TTC to expand service in phases. The goal is to connect 80% of the subway tunnels by the end of this year. Construction is happening overnight and on weekends to avoid interrupting daily commutes.

Back in 2023, Rogers took over the old TTC subway network from BAI Canada and started to upgrade older 3G and 4G networks to 5G on platforms, concourses, and some initial tunnels. BAI Canada built up the network originally but ‘Big 3’ telecoms did not pay to join the network to bring TTC access for their customers.

By the end of next year, Rogers says riders will have full mobile voice, data, and 911 service across all 75 stations and tunnels in Toronto’s subway system.
