Nintendo Switch System Update 20.0.0 Available Now, Laying the Foundation for Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo has released a new firmware update for the Nintendo Switch hardware. Nintendo Switch Firmware Update Version 20.0.0 adds a number of key features, laying the foundation well ahead of the release of Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5.

As revealed in the full patch notes by the company, Nintendo Switch Firmware Update Version 20.0.0 readies users by introducing system transfers for Nintendo Switch 2. There are also new icons for Virtual Game Card alongside new Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Switch News icon colours.

Nintendo Switch Firmware Update Version 20.0.0 allows you to perform a system transfer from your original Nintendo Switch to the Nintendo Switch 2 using local communication. So, suppose you happen to lose access to your original Nintendo Switch hardware before picking up your Nintendo Switch 2. In that case, you can utilize the option to upload system transfer data to a dedicated server. When you get your Nintendo Switch 2, you can then retrieve this data.

It’s worth noting that if you wish to perform a system transfer, your original Nintendo Switch will be reset to factory settings. Unless required, it’s probably best to wait until after you already have your Nintendo Switch 2 in hand.

On top of adding system transfer features, Nintendo has incorporated some new user icons as well as new icons on the Home menu for Virtual Game Cards and GameShare. These two features will become quite vital when the Nintendo Switch 2 launches. Virtual Game Cards allow users who have a physical cartridge to “digitally eject” the game from one Nintendo Switch console to another. So, if you have two different systems with the same Nintendo Account, you can choose which system to play the game on.

Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders have already begun in Canada, starting at $629 across all major retailers. The Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5. Check out my hands-on impressions after spending three hours with the hardware alongside several games launching this summer.
