Netflix Overhauls TV Interface for the First Time in 12 Years

Netflix is rolling out a brand-new look for its TV app, aimed at making it easier for users to find something to watch. The redesign is the platform’s first major update since 2013.

The company says the updated home screen features a cleaner layout, moving the main menu to the center of the screen and displaying more information about each title at a glance. Recommendations will now adjust in real-time based on users’ viewing habits and even the time of day.

“Our goal is to make the experience simpler and more intuitive,” said Netflix Chief Product Officer Eunice Kim. “It’s the same Netflix you love, but easier to use.”

In addition to the new TV experience, Netflix is testing a few mobile features as part of its push to stay ahead in the streaming space. This will include a beta version that will have generative AI search for personalized suggestions, along with a vertical video feed like TikTok.

The changes were unveiled at Netflix’s first-ever Product & Tech Live Virtual Event, where executives highlighted the platform’s recent growth and plans for the future. The updates also come just ahead of Netflix’s May 14 advertiser event, though the company says the timing is unrelated.

Netflix reported record profits last quarter and appears to be leaning into tech upgrades as it expands beyond movies and TV into live events and gaming, now with over 700 million customers watching on the streaming service.

The redesign will begin rolling out to members later this month. It will be interesting to give this new layout a try and see how these changes will work in real life.
