iPadOS 17.7.8 Released for Legacy iPad Pros and iPad 6

Do you have an OG iPad Pro or iPad 6? Surprise—because an iPadOS update is here for you today in the form of 17.7.8.

Apple on Victoria Day has released iPadOS 17.7.8 for the iPad Pro (1st gen) from 2015 and iPad Pro (2nd gen) from 2017, as well as for the iPad 6 from 2018 (it gained Apple Pencil support that year). Ten years later and still getting a software update? Now that’s a good Apple.

The first-gen iPad Pro featured a 12.9-inch Retina display with a resolution of 2732×2048 and was powered by Apple’s A9X chip with 4GB of RAM. It supported the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard, making it the first iPad designed for serious productivity and creative use.

You can update your iPad by going to Settings > General > Software Update. This 17.7.8 update likely contains some critical security updates.

Still using my first-gen iPad Pro to stream videos.

This will hopefully fix the issue with apps not saving their state. I’d stopped even bothering with opening apps (even Apple News) on my iPad 6 because it would give me the ‘newly installed app’ experience every time. Not so bad with news, but games were incredibly frustrating…fingers crossed.
