Google I/O: AI Usage Skyrockets, Google Beam Video Platform Coming

At the opening keynote of Google I/O 2025, the company revealed just how fast its AI footprint is expanding — and introduced Google Beam, a futuristic new video calling platform that aims to blur the line between virtual and in-person meetings.

Since last year’s event, Google says it has released over 20 major AI products and features, and announced more than a dozen research breakthroughs. One of the biggest leaps has come in the scale of AI usage. The company is now processing 480 trillion tokens per month, up from 9.7 trillion a year ago — a 50x increase.

More than 7 million developers have built with the Gemini API, and usage of Gemini models on Vertex AI has surged 40x year-over-year. The Gemini app itself has now surpassed 400 million monthly active users, while AI Overviews in Search are reaching over 1.5 billion people each month — making Google Search the most widely used generative AI product in the world.

Google also pulled the curtain back on Google Beam, a new AI-first video calling platform that transforms flat, 2D video calls into immersive 3D experiences. Beam builds on the company’s earlier Project Starline and uses an array of webcams and AI processing to stitch together video from multiple angles. The result is a 3D lightfield display with head-tracking and smooth 60 fps rendering that gives participants a sense of real-life presence.

Google says Beam devices will roll out later this year, starting with select customers in partnership with HP.
