Apple TV+ Developing Mr. Scorsese, a Five-Part Documentary on Martin Scorsese

Apple TV+ is developing a five-part documentary series on famed director, writer and producer Martin Scorsese. Titled Mr. Scorsese, the series is described as a “film portrait” of the notable filmmaker.

The project is said to focus on Scorsese himself, peeling back the layers on the visionary’s career in filmmaking as well as his personal history. Developed and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Rebecca Miller, Mr. Scorsese had exclusive, unrestricted access to Scorsese’s private archive.

The documentary will also incorporate extensive conversations with the filmmaker as well as those close to him. Already announced guests include  Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mick Jagger, Robbie Robertson, Thelma Schoonmaker, Steven Spielberg, Sharon Stone, Jodie Foster, Paul Schrader, Margot Robbie, Cate Blanchett, Jay Cocks and Rodrigo Prieto. Scorsese’s wife, Helen Morris, and his children will also recount stories and provide context to the series.

“I am so grateful to have been given the artistic freedom and access to create a cinematic portrait of one of our greatest living artists, Martin Scorsese,” said Miller. “His work and life are so vast and so compelling that the piece evolved from one to five parts over a five-year period; crafting this documentary alongside my longtime collaborators has been one of the defining experiences of my life as a filmmaker.”

Mr. Scorsese will go as far back as his time making student films at New York University, the documentary will explore Scorsese’s creative process. It’ll also dive into the themes that have affected his work, including “the place of good and evil in the fundamental nature of humankind.”

The Martin Scorsese documentary joins the Apple TV+ library of documentary projects. This includes Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie as well as Steve!, which focuses on Steve Martin. Unfortunately, there’s no word on when Mr. Scorsese will hit the streaming service.
