Apple’s New ‘Solarium’ Interface to Headline WWDC: Report

Apple’s 2025 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will focus less on artificial intelligence and more on something more foundational: a sweeping software design overhaul.

According to people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports Apple plans to debut a new interface design—internally dubbed “Solarium”—that will unify the look and feel of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS, and even visionOS. The effort marks Apple’s most extensive design refresh since iOS 7 in 2013, but this time it’s happening across the board.

Solarium takes inspiration from visionOS, the operating system behind Apple’s Vision Pro headset. The new look emphasizes sleek, glass-like visuals and modern layouts that aim to bring consistency across Apple’s entire product line—from iPhones and iPads to Macs and Apple Watches.

While Apple will still introduce some AI-powered features at the event, the visual redesign is expected to be the headline. While we’re seeing some major AI breakthroughs from Google and its Gemini AI, for example, Apple looks to be still focusing on design changes, and Apple Intelligence apparently won’t be the major headline.

On the AI front, Apple will reportedly let developers integrate its in-house large language models into apps. The result will mean apps powered by Apple’s AI models.

We’re still waiting for Apple’s delayed AI Siri overhaul, which isn’t coming until later this year and we’ll likely hear a more definitive timeline at WWDC. Sucks to be someone who bought an iPhone 16 series phone thinking they would get all these shiny Apple Intelligence features including a new Siri.

Apple had to come out with a major UI overhaul, especially if Apple wants to create a foldable iPhone/iPad device, then Apple needs to have a UI that supports and runs on both iPhones and iPads, as well as some other devices that can change their screen shapes, and sizes on the fly. Otherwise Apple will never be able to make a foldable device that supports both iPhones and iPads, in one physical device.
