First-Generation Fire TV Devices Will Soon Lose Support to Netflix

Netflix will soon be ending support of Amazon’s oldest Fire TV devices. Starting in June, those still holding onto the first-generation Fire TV devices will no longer be able to use the streaming service.
Owners of the first-generation Fire TV devices have begun being contacted by Netflix, notifying them of the change in support. Word first came by way of German outlet Heise. In a later report from ZDNet, support will be ending on June 3rd. Further corroborated by The Verge, it’s being reported that Netflix will no longer be supported on the first-generation models of Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, and Fire TV Stick with Voice Remote.
Amazon spokesperson Jen Lurey Ridings spoke to The Verge, stating that, “Netflix will be discontinuing support for some first-generation Fire TV devices, which were introduced more than 10 years ago.” Lurey Ridings continues to clarify that the streaming service will remain active on “all other Fire TV devices.”
For those who are still using a first-generation Fire TV device, Amazon is looking into providing discounts for an upgrade. Users “may be eligible for a discount on a newer Fire TV Stick and can contact customer service for more information,” Lurey Ridings said.
For those interested in confirming whether their Fire TV device will retain support, you can navigate to the Settings menu and select the ‘About’ section. Under ‘My Fire TV’, users will receive more information about the device, including which generation it is.
As for the reasoning behind the suspension of support, Netflix has not yet provided any information. However, it’s more than likely that first-generation Fire TV devices can no longer support modern video and audio formats. Thus, Netflix has ultimately decided to end support. However, it’s a frustrating endeavour as it now places the onus on users to upgrade their devices in order to continue being able to stream content from Netflix.
