Google has rolled out a new feature called Search Live, letting users talk to Google Search in a back-and-forth voice chat.
The update is part of the company’s AI Mode experiment (announced recently at Google I/O), available now in the Google app for Android and iOS — but only in the U.S. for users enrolled through Google Labs. Sorry Canada (and everyone else), you’re going to have to wait longer to give this one a try.
Instead of typing, you can ask questions out loud, like “How do I pack a linen dress without wrinkles?” and get spoken AI answers instantly. If you have follow-up questions, you can keep the conversation going — even while using another app. You’ll also see helpful links on-screen to dig deeper.
So what’s the real-world use case for Search Live? Google says it’s helpful to go handsfree and voice only when you’re on the go or multitasking. You just open the Google app, tap the ‘Live’ icon and start asking your questions. This is similar to voice mode in the ChatGPT app.

Search Live runs on a custom version of Google’s Gemini AI, the brain behind its latest AI tools. The company says it’s designed to combine natural voice conversations with reliable web search results. You can also see transcripts of past chats and resume where you left off.
Google says more features are coming, like the ability to show the camera what you’re seeing during your search. For now, voice mode in search is limited to the U.S., but is expected to expand to Canada and beyond soon.
