Nintendo Switch 2 Becomes Fastest‑Selling Console in U.S. History

The Nintendo Switch 2 has shattered U.S. sales records with 1.6 M sales in its launch month of June 2025, asserting itself as the fastest-selling video game console in history, IGN is reporting.

This figure surpasses the previous benchmark set by the PlayStation 4 in November 2013, which sold approximately 1.1 million units in its first month. The milestone also helped drive hardware spending in June to record highs, with U.S. consumers spending $978 million.

The Switch 2’s launch represents a global triumph. Nintendo announced that the console sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide in just four days, marking it as the company’s fastest-selling hardware ever. In Japan, Famitsu reports nearly 950,000 units moved in that same timeframe, eclipsing the original Switch’s debut performance.

Consumers aren’t just buying the console. Accessories are flying off shelves too: the new Switch 2 Pro Controller achieved a 32 percent attach rate, becoming the top-selling accessory by revenue. Game adoption has been equally impressive. About 82% of Switch 2 purchasers added Mario Kart World to their haul, either through bundle purchases or separately.

Retail launch bundles have also been pivotal to this success. The Mario Kart World bundle in particular offered buyers compelling savings. Nintendo is now building momentum for future titles like Donkey Kong Bananza, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Kirby Air Riders, and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.

Early feedback from critics backs Nintendo’s strategy as reviewers have lauded the Switch 2’s upgraded 1080p handheld screen, 4K-capable dock, magnetic Joy-Con controllers, improved ergonomics, and new GameChat video feature.

Looking ahead, Nintendo is preparing for continued demand. Analysts expect another strong surge around the holiday season, aided by new game bundles like Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
