Telus and Koodo to Kill $5 Credit Card Discount—Here’s How to Keep It
Telus and Koodo are ending a long-standing $5 monthly discount for customers who pay their wireless bills using pre-authorized credit card payments.
According to emails seen by iPhone in Canada sent out to Telus and Koodo customers last week, starting October 1, 2025, the $5 discount will be gone—unless you switch to pre-authorized payments through your bank account (in other words—debit).
Both Telus and its flanker brand Koodo are now telling users they can keep their $5 discount if they switch to pre-authorized bank payments instead.
This move follows Telus’ earlier efforts to push customers away from using credit cards. Back in 2022, Telus tried adding a 1.5% credit card processing fee, but the CRTC blocked it. The company later pulled the fee in summer 2023 after customer backlash.
Then in April 2025, Telus rolled out a bigger incentive—$10/month off plans for anyone willing to pay by pre-authorized debit. At the time, a Telus spokesperson told iPhone in Canada, “New mobility customers who sign up for pre-authorized bank payments will receive a $10 monthly discount on eligible in-market plans.” They also emphasized that debit payments help customers avoid late fees.
The credit card discount stuck around for existing customers—until now. Telus and Koodo appear to be phasing it out completely.
Telus says starting April 8, 2025, if you switch to a new plan or renew, you’ll lose that $5 pre-authorized payment discount.
So if you want to avoid paying more each month, it might be time to give up the credit card points and link your bank account instead. But that means any charges made by debit cannot be easily reversed if there’s a dispute, unlike when you pay with a credit card.
You might want to check your spam folder in your inbox, to see if you got this email from Telus or Koodo. What are you going to do? Keep paying by credit card or switch to debit autopay?

I would not recommend anyone give their banking information to these companies.
I second that. More than once we had a monthly service provider withdraw a large amount if money in error and it was very difficult to get them to address it and once it was as Christmas was approaching and effected our cashflow. Never again.
This just made me consider going back to prepaid carriers.
I will move the last of our Telus numbers out. Planned to do it anyways since their network in Ontario isn't what they claim.

Well, time to go back to prepaid. Even with fewer features, I wouldn’t want a postpaid carrier to have direct access to my bank account.
What a delicate bunch. I bet your wives still do everything for you at home.
This should be illegal to almost force their users to pre-authorize their bank account just to match the competition price with the $5 or even $10 discount. Its well known that its not recommended at all to give that permission to anyone. I'm staying with Rogers for this reason. At least they encourage me to prepaid with my credit card. Won't ever considering Bell or Telus as long as they'll have this scammy practice.
Well, they are not forcing you. 🙂 You can ignore their $10 monthly discount or take. At $5 I would just moved on but ten dollars is a very decent savings on a $50 plan.
They’re not technically forcing us, but the price is $10 higher than the competition unless we agree to provide direct access to our bank account. Other providers offer the same discount without requiring this. So essentially, if you want to pay the same price, you’re being pressured into handing over your banking information — no exceptions. To me, that feels borderline illegal.
I could be reading this wrong but this Koodo support article seems to indicate that so long as you have set up your Koodo plan before April 8 and haven’t changed anything since, nothing changes for you. Your $5.00 auto pay credit card discount remains.

Hard to say but I haven't modified my Koodo plan in a couple of years at least and I got the email stating that the $5 discount will end in October.
