OpenAI’s Latest AI Models Land on AWS—And They’re Free to Use

Amazon Web Services (AWS) just made OpenAI’s new free-to-use AI models available to everyone on its platform. This means developers and companies can now use these powerful tools—called ‘open weight’ models—to build AI apps without needing to train their own systems or paying for them.

These new OpenAI models are called gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b. They can help with things like writing code, solving math problems, doing research, and more. They also support advanced features like chain-of-thought reasoning and can process longer inputs (up to 128K tokens), making them ideal for big documents or long conversations. They’re also cheaper to run than some other models from the likes of Google and Meta.

Amazon says these models are great for creating smart AI agents—basically AI tools that can think through problems and take action, like answering customer support questions or helping researchers analyze data.

“Our open weight models help developers—from solo builders to large enterprise teams—unlock new possibilities,” said Dmitry Pimenov, product lead at OpenAI, in a statement on Tuesday.

For those seeking technical details on this announcement, Eric Wallace, Researcher at OpenAI, broke it down on X today just moments ago:

“Open weight models are an important area of innovation in the future development of generative AI technology, which is why we have invested in making AWS the best place to run them—including those launching today from OpenAI,” said Atul Deo, director of product, AWS.

So what’s the advantage of this? Amazon now offers even more options for AI development—and it’s getting easier (and cheaper) to build cool new AI apps, whether you’re a startup or a huge corporation. AWS now offers more than 100 AI models from a range of providers, including the likes of Meta, Mistral and DeepSeek.
