Next iPad Mini to Get A19 Pro Chip, Possible OLED Display

Apple’s next iPad Mini will reportedly feature the A19 Pro chip from the iPhone 17 Pro with possible OLED display delivering major power and visuals boost (via MacRumors).

Based on internal code accidentally revealed by Apple this week, the new iPad Mini devices are referenced under the internal codenames J510 and J511. Compared to the current generation that launched in October 2024 with A17 Pro silicon, this marks a noticeable jump in processing capability.

The upgraded chip promises improved graphics performance and faster multitasking, thanks to additional GPU cores. Apple insiders suggest that this is more than just a modest refresh and may place the small tablet much closer in capability to the high end iPad Pro.

The performance gains could empower creative professionals and gamers who favor a portable form factor. Video editing and augmented reality applications may run smoother and more responsively, while demanding games and Apple Intelligence features could benefit from the extra headroom the A19 Pro offers.

In addition to the chipset upgrade, Apple is rumored to be exploring a move to OLED for the iPad Mini display. That would bring deeper contrast richer colors and improved energy efficiency when compared to the current LCD screen.

As for timing, there is no confirmation on when this updated iPad Mini might arrive. Some suggest a spring 2026 reveal but others caution that the OLED transition or other factors might push a launch into 2027. Given that the last iPad Mini arrived in fall 2024, it is possible Apple may stick to a similar cadence or adjust based on supply and strategic considerations.

This news emerges alongside reports that Apple’s chip update wave continues across its product line. Leaked code also suggests that the upcoming Vision Pro headset may include an M5 chip, the Apple TV could receive an A17 Pro upgrade, and the low cost iPad may gain an A18 processor.

If this upgrade includes ProMotion, they will win my business. The iPad mini is the perfect mobile tablet, but the 60 Hz screen is just brutal. I'll stick to iPad Pro until then.

And to think – its only $500 too expensive for a sub-10" tablet.
