Public Mobile Slashes Rewards, Cutting How Many Points You Earn

Public Mobile customers will soon see smaller perks from the carrier’s rewards program, marking another cutback under parent company Telus.

In an email to customers and seen by iPhone in Canada, Public Mobile said that starting October 15, 2025, the points-back rate will drop from 5% to 2%, and the annual anniversary bonus will be cut from 10 points to 5 points. Since each point is worth $1, that means if you spend $50 a month, you’ll now get 1 point back instead of 2.5. Over a year, that’s a loss of about $18 in rewards for a $50/month plan. That’s a 60% cut in the points-back rate.

The company stressed that existing points balances won’t be touched and that customers can still redeem points for bill credits, add-ons, and discounts. Redemption values will also stay the same. Only the rate at which points are earned is changing.

Public Mobile says the move is about keeping rates “sustainable” while still offering rewards. The brand operates as Telus’s low-cost, prepaid arm, competing with carriers like Lucky Mobile (Bell) and Chatr (Rogers).

The company is also updating its terms and conditions on October 15 to give itself more flexibility in how much notice it provides for future changes to the program. For customers whose plan anniversaries fall before October 15, the current 10-point bonus still applies. Any anniversary after that date will follow the new 5-point rule. These new changes are also now stated on the Public Mobile website but you need to dive into the fine print to notice them.

Last year, there was major pushback from customers after Public Mobile switched its legacy rewards program to the new Public Points system, reducing rewards.

What do you think about this latest cut to the Public Points program?
