How to Get Nova Scotia’s New NS Alert App for Emergency Updates
Nova Scotia has introduced NS Alert, a new app designed to keep residents informed during emergencies and community events.
The app delivers notifications about severe weather, floods, wildfires, and other public safety threats, as well as local notices such as water advisories and major road closures.
Unlike Canada’s national alert system, Alert Ready, which relies on LTE or 5G service, NS Alert also works on 3G networks and Wi-Fi. This means people in rural areas with weaker coverage will still have access to critical information.
Once downloaded, users can choose the locations they want to monitor, such as home, work, or other areas they frequent, and select the types of alerts they want to receive. The app also supports translation in up to 32 languages.
Alerts fall into two categories. Broadcast intrusive alerts demand immediate action, such as evacuation orders, while non-intrusive alerts provide important updates like road closures or re-entry notices following an evacuation.
The app is free to download on iOS and Android, and once installed, users simply need to give permission for alerts and complete the setup. NS Alert says it aims to give Nova Scotians faster access to vital information when it matters most.
NS Alert is made by the same developers as the Alertable app, which can notify you of emergencies and daily incidents in Canada.
Recently, cell coverage in Nova Scotia has been making headlines, as some residents have complained about the lack of coverage in southwestern parts of the province.
