Tesla’s Robotaxi App Arrives in Canada: Here’s What it Can Do

Tesla has released its Robotaxi app in Canada, hinting that the company may be preparing to launch its self-driving ride service here one day.

When you download the app in Apple’s App Store, you first have to agree to the terms—including confirming you’re at least 18 years old. After that, you can hit “Join Waitlist.” Once you’re on it, the app shows robotaxis are available in Austin, Texas. Tesla’s cars are also running in Palo Alto, California (swipe to the left to see the map).

For now, Canadians can’t do much inside the app while waiting. The description says: “Schedule an autonomous ride and step into the future of safe and convenient point-to-point transportation.” But if you do get an invitation, you can then head down to California or Texas to give these Robotaxis a try.

Tesla officially launched the app in the U.S. earlier today for all iPhone users, with an Android version coming later it said. Despite only operating in a couple of U.S. cities, the app quickly shot to the top of the App Store’s travel chart, beating out Uber and Lyft, points out Tesla North.

CEO Elon Musk has said Tesla plans to open its Robotaxi service to the public in September, starting in select markets. In Austin, Tesla has already expanded where robotaxis can drive, even adding freeway routes. The company has hinted at bringing the service to more cities soon, with Chicago possibly next.

As for those safety drivers inside these Robotaxis? Musk says they “should” be gone at the end of 2025, as they were added for extra safety. Other self-driving car services such as Waymo also had safety drivers at launch.

Whether Canada is on that short list isn’t clear—but the app’s appearance here suggests Tesla may be laying the groundwork. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) is available in Canada, the U.S. and recently a debut in Australia.

The company’s Gigafactories in Berlin already have self-driving Model Y vehicles leaving production lines, navigating on their own to lots (and even to customer homes), as is the same for its factory in Fremont, California.
