How to Watch Nintendo’s September Direct and What to Expect

Nintendo has announced that it is hosting a Direct live stream on Friday, September 12th. The company confirms that the event will shed some light on “upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch games.”

Announced on X (formerly Twitter), the company states that the upcoming Nintendo Direct will be “roughly 60 minutes” in length. It being nearly an hour makes this Direct live stream the longest aside from console reveals, like the Nintendo Switch 2.

The upcoming Nintendo Direct falls at a very particular time. The following day, September 13th, is the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., which was originally released for the Famicom on September 13th, 1985. This gives way to speculation that Nintendo is going to be pulling out the stops for a big celebration for everyone’s favourite plumber.

The company has a bit of a hit-or-miss track record when it comes to celebrating major anniversaries. For instance, during Mario’s 35th anniversary, Nintendo launched Super Mario Bros. 35, a limited-time online battle royale game and Super Mario 3D All-Stars, a compilation of HD ports including Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. However, when we look at another franchise like The Legend of Zelda, which celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2021, Nintendo only released  The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD and some themed Joy-Cons.

This all being said, there’s a likelihood that Nintendo could make a big splash for Mario’s 40th anniversary. Following the release of Mario Kart World for Nintendo Switch 2, there’s the possibility we hear about Nintendo’s post-launch plans or DLC. We could always see another compilation of ports for the new hardware, as well as a potential sneak peek at the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel.

Outside of this, there are a few tentpole games rounding out 2025 that still need release dates from Nintendo. The biggest being Metroid Prime 4, which is still slated to release this year. On top of this, there are a few fall games that could appear during the live stream, like Pokémon Legends Z/A and Kirby: Air Riders.

If you want to tune in for the full our for the Nintendo Direct, everything kicks off on Friday, September 12th at 9 AM ET/6 AM PT on Nintendo’s official YouTube channel.
