Mario Kart World Debuts on Nintendo Switch 2 with Open-World Racing

Nintendo has officially released Mario Kart World as a flagship title for the newly launched Nintendo Switch 2, marking a significant evolution in the iconic racing franchise.

Departing from traditional circuit-based tracks, this installment offers an expansive open-world experience, allowing players to explore interconnected environments within the Mushroom Kingdom (via RollingStone).

Developed by Nintendo EPD under the direction of Kosuke Yabuki, Mario Kart World supports up to 24 players in a single race, doubling the capacity of previous entries. The game introduces several new gameplay mechanics, including off-road racing, wall-jumping, rail-grinding, and boat racing.

A notable addition is the “Knockout Tour” mode, a battle royale-style competition where racers are progressively eliminated as they reach checkpoints.

The open-world design draws inspiration from the kishōtenketsu narrative structure, emphasizing exploration and discovery over traditional racing formats. Players can freely roam the game’s vast landscapes, encountering dynamic weather conditions and time-of-day cycles that influence gameplay and music. This approach aims to provide a more immersive and varied racing experience.

In addition to new gameplay elements, Mario Kart World features a roster of 50 playable characters, including familiar faces and new entrants who previously appeared as course hazards. Many characters have unlockable costumes, adding a layer of customization. The game also reimagines classic tracks to fit the open-world format, offering both nostalgia and fresh challenges for longtime fans.

Also, the high-speed 200cc engine class, introduced in Mario Kart 8, is absent from this release. While some players appreciated the thrill of 200cc races, others found them challenging to control. Nintendo has not ruled out the possibility of adding this feature in future updates.

Mario Kart World is available as a standalone purchase or bundled with the Nintendo Switch 2 console. With its blend of classic elements and new features, Mario Kart World sets a new standard for the franchise and showcases the capabilities of Nintendo’s latest hardware.
