Google Nest Thermostats No Longer Need the Nest App

Google has rolled out a major update that means you don’t need the Nest app anymore to manage your Nest Thermostat. Starting now, all Nest Thermostat models released since 2015 can be fully controlled in the Google Home app.

That includes setting schedules, adjusting temperatures, and managing fans and sensors — all directly in Home. European users also gain hot water controls for the first time in the Home app, a feature previously limited to the Nest app.

Google says the change makes it easier to keep everything in one place. The Home app lets you manage your Nest Thermostat alongside other climate devices, pin favourites, create automations, and even check outdoor weather and air quality.

Additional improvements are rolling out in the coming weeks, including:

  • Hot water boost and scheduling for compatible European boilers
  • Easy-access Eco button for energy savings
  • Expanded controls for non-thermostat devices like mini-splits and smart heaters
  • Simplified settings and bug fixes for smoother control

The update marks the end of needing two separate apps for Nest Thermostat owners. Going forward, the Google Home app is the single destination for setup and control. For owners of Nest doorbells and cameras, the Nest app still can be used. It looks like the Nest app’s writing on the wall is getting near.

Back in April, Google told customers that it would be ending support for its first and second-get Nest Learning Thermostats later this year, nudging them with a discount to upgrade to the latest 4th-gen Thermostat.

They don't seem to get it. Some of us don't want to migrate off of the Nest app. until Google Home improves the Home experience we don't want to. I refuse to move to Google Home as long as Home doesn't allow me to scrub through my camera timeline in the same smooth way that Nest does. It's enough of an annoyance that I've now moved off of Google Thermostats for an Ecobee (just ditched my gen2 thermostat) and am planning for migrating off of their cameras.

I did same long ago, if didn't support home assistant, doesn't get my money. Cameras especially as I like the reolink support for home assistant and recording to local drives. Only thing I haven't replaced is Google doorbell as Google doesn't allow other manufacturers to show live feed in Google home, vendor lock-in. Can be at grocery store and have live conversation with someone at your front door, hard to ditch this..

We loose so much more though, we could have free facial recognition with frigate home assistant add-on. My preference for hardware is generally if Internet goes out, you still can control your smart home. Zigbee/zwave devices or no cloud Wi-Fi/POE cameras.
