iPhone Air Bends but Doesn’t Break—Still Shatters in Allstate Drop Test

Apple’s new iPhone Air, the thinnest iPhone yet, held up against bending pressure but cracked during drop tests, according to Allstate Protection Plans’ latest breakability tests.
In back-down drops from six feet, the iPhone 17 Pro survived with minor scuffs, while the iPhone Air’s rear panel cracked but the phone stayed usable. In face-down drops, both phones’ screens shattered after a single fall, leaving the devices functional but unsafe to use without repairs.
On bend tests, the iPhone Air bent at 190 pounds of pressure and the iPhone 17 Pro at 200 pounds, with both still working afterward. Allstate noted these results were well above industry standards and avoided a repeat of “Bendgate,” which affected earlier slim smartphones.
“Apple avoided another Bendgate, but gravity still wins,” said Jason Siciliano, vice president of marketing at Allstate Protection Plans. “While iPhone Air impressed, and the Ceramic Shield rear panels of both iPhone Air and 17 Pro are the most durable we’ve tested in years, both iPhones still shattered when dropped face-down.”
The iPhone Air starts at $1,449 in Canada and the iPhone 17 Pro at $1,599, with screen repairs costing up to $619 CAD without AppleCare.

After seeing so many iPhone 17 and iPhone Air torture tests, it’s clear the Air is pretty impressive for its ability to withstand any “bendgate” fallouts. Glass will always break at some point, so you can’t beat physics.
