Apple just dropped a new 14-inch MacBook Pro powered by its new M5 chip, and it’s easily the most powerful MacBook yet—especially when it comes to AI performance touts the company.
Yesterday, Apple teased something ‘powerful’ was coming this week and the updated M5 14-inch MacBook Pro is here, alongside a new M5 iPad Pro too (more on that later).
The M5 chip gives the MacBook Pro a serious speed boost, handling AI tasks up to 3.5 times faster than before. Apple says the new GPU design includes a “Neural Accelerator” in every core, helping the laptop breeze through things like image generation, video editing, and even running local AI models directly on the device — no cloud needed. It’s also 1.6x faster for graphics and comes with a quicker CPU, faster storage, and higher memory bandwidth, making it ideal for heavy creative or coding work.
“MacBook Pro continues to be the world’s best pro laptop, and today, the 14-inch MacBook Pro gets even better with the arrival of the M5 chip,” said John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, in a statement on Wednesday. “M5 marks the next big leap in AI for the Mac and delivers a huge boost in graphics performance, accelerating demanding workflows for everyone from students to creatives, developers to business professionals, and more. With its amazing performance, extraordinary battery life, and unrivaled display, M5 takes the new 14-inch MacBook Pro to another level.”
Battery life now stretches up to 24 hours, while Apple has also improved the SSD, so importing RAW photos or exporting large video projects takes less time. The M5 MacBook Pro supports up to 4TB of storage, 16GB of memory to start, and has the same Liquid Retina XDR display (1600 nits peak brightness) with a nano-texture glass option to cut glare. You still get the 12MP Center Stage webcam, six-speaker Spatial Audio system, and plenty of ports.
Environmentally, Apple says the new laptop uses 45% recycled materials and ships in all-fibre packaging.
The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 comes in space black and silver, starts at the same $2,099 in Canada, and is available to pre-order now (it’s not on Amazon.ca yet), with shipping starting October 22.
