OpenAI Buys Sky, the Team Behind Apple’s Workflow and Shortcuts Apps

OpenAI has acquired Software Applications Incorporated, the company behind Sky, a popular Mac app that uses natural language to let users control their computer with AI.

Sky acts as an on-screen assistant that can understand what’s on your display and take actions in your apps — from writing and planning to coding and organizing tasks. The company’s entire team will join OpenAI, which plans to integrate Sky’s deep macOS features into ChatGPT.

OpenAI says the move will help make ChatGPT more useful by allowing it to work directly with tools people already use, rather than just replying to text prompts.

Sky’s co-founder and CEO Ari Weinstein said the app was designed to make computers more intuitive and adaptable, and that joining OpenAI will help bring that experience to a much larger audience.

The app is a macOS-native AI assistant built by the former creators of Workflow (now Shortcuts), and it tightly integrates with Apple’s ecosystem of apps. Its acquisition by OpenAI hints at further AI-related automation for Mac users.

The deal was led by Nick Turley and Fidji Simo, and approved by OpenAI’s independent board committees.
