SaskTel Upgrades Its Network with Samsung’s New 5G Core

Samsung Canada says SaskTel has started deploying its new cloud-native 4G and 5G Core on the carrier’s network, part of ongoing efforts to modernize wireless service across Saskatchewan. The rollout is expected to bring faster speeds, lower latency, and more reliable connectivity for customers across voice, data, and messaging.

Samsung’s Core replaces traditional telecom infrastructure with a virtualized, software-based platform that can scale more easily and automate network management tasks. The upgrade is designed to help SaskTel launch new services faster and make better use of network resources.

“We at SaskTel are proud to launch Samsung’s Core on our network, which will serve as a transformative step toward accelerating innovation and enhancing the everyday wireless experience for our customers,” said Charlene Gavel, SaskTel’s President and CEO, in a statement on Monday.

The new Core will work alongside SaskTel’s 3500 MHz and 3800 MHz spectrum bands, boosting network speeds and capacity. SaskTel also plans to adopt Samsung’s 5G Standalone Core in the next phase of its modernization program.

Samsung Canada’s Stephen Wiktorski said the company is “thrilled to celebrate the deployment” of its 4G and 5G Core in SaskTel’s commercial network, adding that the partnership demonstrates Samsung’s commitment to expanding advanced connectivity across Canada.

SaskTel’s 5G network, launched in 2021, now covers nearly 90 percent of Saskatchewan’s population. The carrier says the upgrade with Samsung will strengthen support for connected devices, smart homes, and future technologies such as remote healthcare and AI-driven services.

Other carriers in Canada using Samsung’s cloud-native core includes Telus, which is leveraging the latter for better roaming alongside a partnership with AWS.
