iPhone 17 Wi-Fi Speeds Are Way Faster Than iPhone 16, Here’s Why

A new report from Ookla says Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup delivers a significant Wi-Fi performance boost thanks to the company’s first in-house wireless chip, the N1.

Using Speedtest data collected in the six weeks after launch, Ookla found the iPhone 17 consistently outperformed last year’s iPhone 16 models in every major region, posting up to 40% faster download and upload speeds globally.

The upgrades weren’t just visible in ideal conditions. The biggest improvements appeared in tougher Wi-Fi environments, where the iPhone 17 showed more than a 60% jump at the 10th percentile—suggesting Apple’s new chip does a much better job holding stable speeds when networks are congested or signal strength drops.

Even with those gains, Android flagships remain highly competitive. Google’s Pixel 10 Pro recorded the fastest median global download speeds overall, narrowly edging out the iPhone 17. Xiaomi’s 15T Pro led in peak upload performance and latency thanks to its Wi-Fi 7 platform.

Meanwhile, Huawei’s Pura 80 trailed at the top end because it lacks 6 GHz support, though it performed better when tested only on Wi-Fi 6 networks.

While the N1 lacks support for the wider 320 MHz Wi-Fi 7 channels used by some Android devices, Ookla’s analysis suggests Apple is prioritizing consistency and tight hardware-software integration over chasing the highest theoretical speeds.

Across every major market studied—including the U.S., U.K., France, Japan and India—the iPhone 17 delivered higher real-world Wi-Fi performance than the iPhone 16. According to Ookla, the improvements are broad enough and consistent enough to reflect true silicon gains rather than early-adopter bias.

Too bad it still can’t keep a connection to Chromecast for more than 30 seconds. I’m so fed up of having to toggle the wifi so that it sees Chromecast again. Doesn’t happen on my iPhone 7.
