Apple’s Chip Boss Might Quit, Throwing Cupertino Into Panic Mode
Apple is dealing with another possible shakeup in its leadership ranks, as longtime hardware technologies chief Johny Srouji has told Chief Executive Tim Cook that he’s weighing an exit, according to people familiar with the situation, reports Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
Srouji, who oversees the company’s chip program and played a central role in building Apple’s custom silicon strategy, has signaled internally that he may join another firm if he decides to move on. His potential departure comes as Apple is already dealing with a huge number of senior executives retiring or leaving the company.
The timing adds pressure on Cook, who has been trying to retain Srouji with a sizable pay offer and discussions about giving him more authority. One option floated inside the company involves creating a chief technology officer position, which would broaden his role across hardware engineering and chip development.
If Srouji ultimately leaves, Apple would likely promote from within. Two of his top deputies, Zongjian Chen and Sribalan Santhanam, are viewed inside Cupertino as the most likely successors, says Gurman.
Apple is dealing with recent departures in its engineering ranks, with people moving to Meta, OpenAI, and other AI-focused companies. This has been a crazy week of announcements and now Srouji is rumoured to leave.
Gurman added on Saturday, “In another new development, Apple senior displays executive – in charge of optics in the Vision Pro and other screen technologies – Cheng Chen is being hired by OpenAI’s hardware division.” Ouch.
