More U.S. States Get iPhone Driver Licenses
More U.S. states are preparing to let residents store official driver’s licenses and state identification cards in the Apple Wallet app starting in 2026, MacRumors is reporting.
At present, more than a dozen states across the United States already allow motorists and ID holders to add their credentials to Wallet on both iPhone and Apple Watch devices.
These digital licenses work much like mobile boarding passes or payment cards, enabling users to present proof of identification simply by tapping their device at compatible readers. Travelers may use these digital credentials at participating Transportation Security Administration checkpoints in domestic airports, making for faster and more seamless identity checks before flights.
The states that currently support digital driver’s licenses and ID cards in Apple Wallet include longtime participants such as Arizona, Maryland, Colorado and Georgia, along with more recent additions like Montana, North Dakota, West Virginia and Illinois.
Puerto Rico also offers the feature to eligible residents. Consumers in these areas can open Apple Wallet, choose to add a driver’s license or ID, and follow the onscreen steps including verifying their identity.
Looking ahead to 2026, Apple and state motor vehicle departments have confirmed plans to bring Wallet ID support to several additional states. Connecticut, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Utah, Arkansas and Virginia have all signed agreements or announced commitments to adopt the system, although exact timelines for when residents can activate their digital credentials remain unclear.
Some states previously offered mobile driver’s licenses through standalone apps that were not linked to Apple Wallet, but new agreements will let residents integrate those credentials directly into the Wallet app, making them more convenient and widely usable.
Arkansas and Virginia are two examples where existing digital licenses will soon work within Wallet.
