What’s New in iOS 26.4 Beta: RCS Encryption, New Apple Music Design and More

iOS 26.4 Beta 1 Features

Apple has released the first beta of iOS 26.4 for developers and public testers earlier today. This version introduces a significant security boost for messaging and a complete overhaul of the music and podcast experience.

Below is a breakdown of all the new features in iOS 26.4 beta, as shared by YouTube channel Zollotech.

Secure Messaging and Intelligence Updates

The biggest security addition is end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging. This ensures that conversations between iPhone and supported Android devices remain private and unreadable by third parties. The feature is currently in beta and can be found in the Messages settings, though it is currently dependent on carrier support.

Regarding Apple Intelligence, the update is preparing for major Siri improvements. While new Siri features aren’t live yet, the system is downloading new models and assets. This has temporarily locked out Chat GPT settings and extensions until the download completes, according to Zollotech’s breakdown of iOS 26.4.

Redesigned Music and Video Podcasts

Apple Music has received its biggest visual refresh in years. The play, shuffle, and download buttons have been moved for better reach, and player backgrounds now dynamically match the colour of album artwork. A new Playlist Playground feature also allows users to create custom playlists through text prompts.

For podcast fans, a new video experience allows you to switch between audio and video formats instantly with a single tap. This update also includes a “Concerts Near You” feature within the Music library. Apple announced earlier today that a new version of Apple Podcasts was coming to support videos.

System Changes and New Tools

  • Stolen Device Protection: This security layer is now enabled by default to protect your data if your phone is stolen.
  • AirPods Beta Access: Users of AirPods Pro 2, Pro 3, and AirPods 4 can now opt into beta firmware directly through a new toggle in settings.
  • Wallpaper Storage: Default wallpapers are no longer pre-installed, saving storage space. Users can now choose to download only the ones they want.
  • Free Form: The app features a new icon and a “Creator Studio” splash screen for better organization.
  • App Store: The account page has been reorganized with new buttons to add money, redeem codes, or send gifts.
  • Mail: The Outlook icon has been updated in the “Add Account” menu.
  • Games App: A new splash screen highlights controller support and score tracking.

Performance and Bug Fixes

Early reports suggest that the frustrating keyboard lag bug has finally been resolved. There is also a new modem update (version 1.54.01) to improve cellular reliability. While the update feels smooth, Apple has noted some known issues, such as potential crashes when downloading App Store assets and problems mounting HFS-formatted external drives.

Apple on Monday sent out invites for a special “Apple experience” taking place in New York, London, and Shanghai on March 4. It’s likely any product updates will be tied to iOS 26.4 when it is out for final release.
