Virtual Boy: Nintendo Classics App is Now Available on Nintendo Switch

Nintendo has launched its Virtual Boy: Nintendo Classics app on Switch and Switch 2. Players can install it straight from the eShop and find seven games to play starting today.

The Virtual Boy: Nintendo Classics app offers players the chance to revisit the past and play retro titles from the original Virtual Boy era. To access the library, players must have an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription. An annual subscription to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is available for $63.99 in Canada.

In addition, players must own the newly released physical Virtual Boy accessory. This can be purchased from the Nintendo website for $109.99 starting today, unless you had preordered it. To acquire a Virtual Boy peripheral, you must be subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online at the time of purchase.

The Virtual Boy accessory is a near replica of the original Virtual Boy portable console that launched in 1995. The device was able to render stereoscopic 3D graphics and used a red monochrome display viewed through a binocular-like viewfinder. The device was short-lived, however, as Nintendo discontinued the Virtual Boy the following year after only bringing 22 games to the platform.

To coincide with the release of its Virtual Boy: Nintendo Classics app, Nintendo is launching the following software:

  • 3D Tetris
  • Galactic Pinball
  • Golf
  • The Mansion of Innsmouth
  • Red Alarm
  • Teleroboxer
  • Virtual Boy Wario Land

An additional nine games will follow sometime in the future. These include Jack Bros, Mario Clash, Mario’s Tennis, Space Invaders Virtual Collection, Virtual Bowling, Vertical Force, and V-Tetris. This also includes D-Hopper and Zero Racer, both of which were never officially released.

With this in mind, games such as Nester’s Funky Bowling, Panic Bomber, SD Gundam Dimension War, Space Squash, Virtual Fighting, Virtual Lab, Virtual League Baseball and Waterworld have yet to be confirmed for the Virtual Boy: Nintendo Classics app. So, players may want to keep this in mind. Licensing issues are likely keeping these games from being added in the future.
