What You Need to Know: Apple’s new iPhone 17e brings a big performance boost with the A19 chip and the addition of MagSafe, all while doubling the entry-level storage to 256GB. In Canada, the device maintains its predecessor’s starting price of $899, offering twice the capacity for the same value as the previous generation. Pre-orders for the 256GB and 512GB models begin this Wednesday, March 4, with official retail availability starting March 11.

Apple has unveiled the iPhone 17e, which it says brings new hardware upgrades and enhanced durability to its entry “low cost” iPhone (usually meant for your mom or grandma). The new model gets some big upgrades over its predecessor, the iPhone 16e, by doubling the starting storage capacity and introducing Apple’s latest chips found in the iPhone 17 series.

The iPhone 17e is powered by the new A19 chip (same as in the iPhone 17 series), built on an advanced 3-nanometer process. This delivers a 6-core CPU that is significantly more efficient than previous generations and a 4-core GPU that supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing for console-level gaming. To support modern AI demands, the 16-core Neural Engine has been optimized to run large generative models faster than ever before.

“iPhone 17e combines powerful performance and features our users love at an exceptional value, making it a compelling option for customers looking to upgrade to the iPhone 17 family,” said Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing.

Pro-level connectivity and display

A new feature of the iPhone 17e is the C1X cellular modem. This Apple-designed chip is up to 2x faster than the modem found in the iPhone 16e while using 30 percent less energy. This efficiency, combined with the power management of iOS 26, helps enable exceptional all-day battery life.

The 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display now features Ceramic Shield 2. This new front cover offers 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation and includes a specialized coating to reduce glare and reflections, making it easier to view in direct sunlight.

With MagSafe, users can leverage fast wireless charging and access to a vast ecosystem of accessories like chargers and cases. iPhone 17e also supports MagSafe and Qi2 for fast wireless charging up to 15W compared to 7.5W Qi wireless charging on iPhone 16e.

Advanced 48MP Fusion camera

The camera system sees a substantial boost with a 48MP Fusion lens. This hardware allows for an optical-quality 2x Telephoto, effectively giving users the versatility of two different focal lengths in a single camera setup. The system also supports next-generation portraits with automatic depth information capture and 4K Dolby Vision video recording at up to 60 fps.

Pricing and Canadian availability

The iPhone 17e now starts at 256GB of storage (double from before) for the same starting price of $899. It’s about time 128GB storage was retired. Full Canadian pricing is below:

  • 256GB – $899
  • 512GB – $1199

Last year, starting prices were $899 for 128GB and $1049 for 256GB. This year, you’ll pay $150 more for the larger storage, but you get 512GB (was $1049 for 256GB).

The iPhone 17e features a premium matte finish and is available in three colours: black, white, and a new soft pink. Canadian customers can pre-order the iPhone 17e beginning Wednesday, March 4, at 6:15 a.m. PST on Apple.ca, with retail availability starting Wednesday, March 11.
