Ahead of Gamescom 2026, Asus has announced that its ROG Xbox Ally X20 will launch on October 15th. Pre-orders for the new gaming handheld are available now, starting at $1,899.

The ROG Xbox Ally X20 was first revealed at Computex in June. Designed to celebrate ROG’s 20th anniversary while continuing Asus’ partnership with Xbox, the handheld stands out from the existing Ally X. Rather than simply putting a special-edition shell around the current handheld, ASUS has made meaningful hardware changes, most notably to the screen.

During a behind-closed-doors briefing, I had a chance to spend some time with the ROG Xbox Ally X20, and the first thing that jumps out is that this is still unmistakably an Ally handheld. I’ve been following the series of gaming hardware since its inception, and despite many new iterations, Asus maintains a lot of design consistency this year.  The familiar Xbox-style controls and chunky grips remain, but the new OLED display makes the device feel considerably more premium when you actually pick it up.

I’ve used the ROG Xbox Ally X consistently since its release, and the one thing I’ve been waiting on the most has been the implementation of an OLED display. The ROG Xbox Ally X20 has a 7.4-inch Full HD OLED display running at 120Hz. It supports FreeSync Premium Pro, Dolby Vision HDR and 100 percent DCI-P3 colour coverage, with 600 nits of typical SDR brightness and up to 1,400 nits in HDR. ASUS also uses Gorilla Glass Victus with Gorilla Glass DXC to reduce reflections.

That larger OLED panel is arguably the biggest reason to consider the X20 over the existing Ally X. The 16:9 aspect ratio isn’t changing, but trimming the top bezel gives games more room to breathe. OLED also makes a noticeable difference in darker games, where blacks are actually black rather than the slightly washed-out look you get from a conventional LCD. In just a short span of hands-on time, the difference in screen quality was impactful. The use of an OLED makes a night-and-day difference. Photos and videos can only convey so much; seeing it in person is the selling point.

ASUS has also addressed the controls. The ROG Xbox Ally X20 uses TMR joysticks with RGB rings, alongside Hall Effect analogue triggers, HD haptics and a six-axis IMU. The D-pad is a transforming design that can switch between four- and eight-direction inputs, while the face buttons have also been redesigned. It also has two assignable rear buttons.

In practice, the control changes are less dramatic than the OLED panel, but they make sense. TMR joysticks are widely considered to be the new gold standard for peripherals. The technology used bumps up longevity, avoiding stick drift over time. The ROG Xbox Ally has always been a relatively comfortable handheld for longer sessions, and the X20 doesn’t throw away that ergonomic foundation just to make something new.

Underneath, things are much closer to the existing ROG Xbox Ally X. The X20 is powered by AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 5 processor running up to 5GHz, with an XDNA NPU capable of up to 50 TOPS. It’s paired with 24GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD.  When looking under the hood of the ROG XBox Ally X20, it’s essentially the exact same as last year’s model.

That’s important because ASUS isn’t trying to sell the X20 as a dramatically faster Ally. The performance ceiling is broadly familiar. Instead, the company has spent the anniversary upgrade budget on the parts of the handheld you interact with constantly. Admittedly, the internals are a lot less exciting than they should be, especially at this year’s price point.

The 80Wh battery also carries over, with ASUS listing a 68W USB-C power adapter. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, a 3.5mm headphone jack, USB-C 3.2 Gen 2, USB4 with DisplayPort 2.1 and a microSD Express card reader. The handheld weighs 756 grams. It’s worth mentioning because the X20 is not exactly a featherweight. At 756g, you’re still holding a fairly substantial gaming handheld. That said, during hands-on time, the weight didn’t feel particularly awkward because the chassis distributes it around the grips rather than leaving you balancing a slab of electronics between your hands.

The design itself is also much more distinctive than the standard Ally X. The translucent black body and gold internal accents are intended to celebrate ROG’s 20th anniversary, and they give the X20 a decidedly retro-futuristic look. I’m always a sucker for transparent tech. There’s something inherently cool about looking at the guts of a piece of hardware.

Originally, ASUS positioned the X20 as part of a bundle with the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 gaming glasses. Those glasses connect to the Ally over USB-C and can create a virtual 171-inch display at up to 240Hz. Asus has also announced that the bundle includes a large Pelican Protector case to store the ROG Xbox Ally X20 and the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 while on the go. Asus also throws in a dbrand Killswitch case for the handheld.

ASUS has since confirmed that the X20 would also be sold on its own, which makes considerably more sense for people who simply want the handheld.

Pre-orders for the ROG XBox Ally X are available starting August 25th at Best Buy. On September 24th, the pre-orders for the standalone handheld will be available on the Asus Store. The bundle with the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 glasses will also be available to pre-order exclusively on the Asus Store that day.

For me, the X20’s appeal isn’t really about needing another few frames per second. The existing Ally X already has plenty of horsepower for a handheld. It’s the combination of the OLED panel, improved sticks and updated controls that makes the X20 feel like the version ASUS probably wanted to build all along.

ROG Xbox Ally X20 begins shipping on October 15 in Canada, the US, and other global markets.
