Google Launches Gemini AI Features for Chrome Users in Canada

Google has officially expanded its latest suite of browser-based artificial intelligence tools to Canada, bringing Gemini in Chrome to desktop and iOS users starting today.

The update, powered by the Gemini 3.1 model, introduces a side panel assistant designed to help users process information and complete tasks without ever having to switch tabs. This rollout includes support for over 50 additional languages, including French and Spanish, making it widely accessible for Canadian users on Mac, Windows, and Chromebook Plus.

The core of the update is a new icon in the top right corner of the browser that opens a dedicated chat interface. From this panel, you can ask the AI to summarize long articles, create study quizzes from web content, or even modify recipes on the fly. Because the tool is built directly into the browser, it can understand the context of your open tabs to provide specific help with whatever you are currently reading or researching.

This Canadian release features deep integration with popular Google apps like Gmail, Maps, and Calendar. You can now draft and send emails or schedule meetings directly from the Chrome side panel without navigating away from your current webpage. The AI can also pull key points from YouTube videos or cross-reference data across multiple open tabs to create comparison tables, which is useful for tasks like shopping for products or planning travel.

Google is also bringing Nano Banana 2 within the browser to allow for on-the-fly image transformations. By typing a simple prompt into the side panel, you can edit or reimagine images found on the web without needing to upload files or open a new tab.

On the security front, Gemini in Chrome has been trained to recognize threats like prompt injection and includes built-in safeguards that require user confirmation before taking sensitive actions, such as sending an email or adding an event to your calendar.

While these features are live for desktop and iOS, Android users in Canada can access similar capabilities by holding the power button to activate Gemini while using the Chrome app. Gemini has been getting real good lately with these updates, and we can’t wait to see how the integration with Apple’s upcoming AI Siri will be like.
