Google Maps Gets Biggest AI Redesign in a Decade With Gemini Integration

Google Maps is undergoing its biggest overhaul in a decade, integrating Gemini AI to change how users search for locations and navigate the road.

The update, announced today by Google Maps VP Miriam Daniel, debuts a conversational search tool and a 3D-heavy driving interface designed to make directions feel more natural.

The most notable addition is a feature called Ask Maps. Instead of traditional keyword searches, users can now ask complex questions like, “Is there a public tennis court with lights on that I can play at tonight?” or ask for specific midway meeting spots that cater to dietary needs like vegan options.

The AI analyzes reviews from over 500 million contributors to provide insider tips, such as finding hidden hiking trails or specific parking recommendations, rather than just a list of names and addresses, which is pretty powerful to get you specific answers.

The new Navigation interface features a vivid 3D view that accurately reflects buildings, terrain, and overpasses. To help drivers feel more confident during difficult merges, the map now highlights critical details like specific lanes, crosswalks, and traffic signals.

Google is also changing the way it talks to drivers, moving toward natural voice guidance. Instead of just “turn left in 200 metres,” the app might say, “Go past this exit and take the next one for Illinois 43 South,” mimicking how a friend might give directions.

The update also aims to reduce the stress of the final stretch of a trip. As you approach a destination, Maps will now highlight the specific building entrance and nearby parking options, so you aren’t circling the block looking for a door. It also provides more context on route tradeoffs, such as showing if a faster route includes a toll or if a longer route offers a significantly smoother drive with less traffic.

Ask Maps is currently rolling out on Android and iOS in the U.S. and India, with a desktop version coming soon. The Immersive Navigation features start their rollout today in the U.S. across mobile devices and in-car systems like CarPlay and Android Auto.

All of these updates just make Apple Maps fall further behind, until we see some Siri AI upgrades in the future.

When will Canada get Gemini in Google Maps?

There is no specific date for a Canadian launch yet. Google said that these features will expand to other countries “over the coming months,” but they haven’t shared a definitive timeline for North of the border. So you’ll just have to keep waiting for now.
