Apple Testing Standalone Siri App and Major AI Overhaul for iOS 27
We have some more details about Apple’s AI overhaul of Siri, and it includes a new dedicated app. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman on Tuesday, Apple is testing a standalone Siri app alongside a new Ask Siri feature designed to work across various software platforms.
Sources familiar with the project say the updated Siri, code-named Campo, will feature a modern look and a conversational experience similar to popular chatbots. The overhaul is expected to be a highlight at Apple’s WWDC on June 8, where it will be introduced as part of iOS 27 and macOS 27.
The new Siri app (for iPhone, iPad, Mac) is designed to give users one place to manage past interactions, featuring a layout that resembles a message thread. People with knowledge of the matter noted that users will be able to pin favourite chats, search through old conversations, and upload documents or photos for the AI to analyze.
Beyond the dedicated app, Apple is testing deeper integration into the iPhone and Mac interface. A new Ask Siri toggle may appear in various menus, allowing users to highlight text and send it directly into a conversation with the assistant for more information. Gurman reports that Apple is also working on a Write with Siri button for the keyboard to make its text generation and editing tools easier to find.
As for Spotlight, which is used for system searches, that is said to be replaced with Siri.
The revamped assistant will have better access to personal data, such as emails and notes, to help fulfil specific requests. It will also be able to search the web to provide summaries and images, competing more directly with other AI search tools. These advancements are reportedly powered by Apple’s own models in partnership with Google Gemini technology.
While some features have faced delays in the past, employees are currently testing these updates in internal versions of iOS 27. The goal is to turn Siri into a tool that can not only answer questions but also control specific functions within apps and navigate menus through voice commands.
Let’s not beat around the bush. Apple is so far behind on AI right now and it’s pretty sad that it has taken them this long to produce an AI version of Siri, made only possible in due part through the new Google partnership for Gemini. Right now, there’s no point to even enable Apple Intelligence on Apple devices.
