How MacBook Neo is Saving Apple in a Downward Market
The global notebook market is bracing for a significant drop in expected shipments for 2026. Market research firm TrendForce has once again lowered its forecast, now predicting a 14.8% year-over-year decline in global laptop deliveries.
According to the report, memory costs have risen so sharply that they now account for more than 20% of a laptop’s total bill of materials (BOM). When you add in rising CPU prices, some entry-level processors from Intel have seen hikes of over 15%, the total cost to build a mainstream laptop could jump by nearly 40%.
Faced with these soaring production costs, notebook brands are being forced to raise retail prices to protect their profit margins. However, these higher price tags are arriving at a time when global economic recovery remains sluggish. The demand for entry-level and budget-friendly consumer laptops has been hit the hardest.
Apple, however, is taking the opposite approach. Instead of retreating, the company has launched the MacBook Neo with a starting price of $799 (and as low as $599 in some regions or for education). This targets the critical $500 to $800 price bracket, a segment previously dominated by Windows laptops and Chromebooks.
TrendForce actually expects Apple’s shipments to grow by 7.7% in 2026, defying the broader market crash. This resilience is attributed to several factors:
- Vertical Integration: By using its own Apple Silicon chips, the company is less vulnerable to the price hikes and supply volatility affecting third-party CPU makers.
- Product Strategy: The recent introduction of the “MacBook Neo” allows Apple to capture more price-sensitive segments while maintaining high brand value.
- Streamlined Supply Chain: A simplified model lineup allows Apple to concentrate its procurement volume, giving it more leverage when negotiating with memory suppliers.
The research firm expects macOS market share to climb to 13.2% by the end of the year. While the rest of the industry waits for the economic clouds to clear, Apple is using its supply chain muscle to lock in a new generation of users.
