Rocket League to be the First Game Running on Unreal Engine 6

This weekend, Epic Games unveiled Unreal Engine 6 by announcing Rocket League will be the first game running the new game engine.
During the 2026 Rocket League Championship Series Paris Major, Epic Games and developer Psyonix shocked fans by announcing that Rocket League would be getting a major upgrade. The free-to-play game will transition over to Unreal Engine 6 at an undisclosed time.
“What. A. Moment.,” the description for the Unreal Engine 6 reveal reads. “The crowd reacts to the new era of Rocket League.”
Unreal Engine 6 is the successor to Unreal Engine 5, which debuted in 2020. Epic Games or Psyonix have not detailed what advantages the new engine will bring to the popular competitive vehicle soccer game. However, based on the small snippet of footage, we expect shiny visuals and more realistic rendering in the game. The reveal trailer states that everything shown is “captured real-time in game.”
Rocket League was released in 2015 and is built on Unreal Engine 3. Although the game is still wildly popular and has amassed a global community of players, it’s hard to ignore its dated bones. An upgrade to Unreal Engine 6 will surely breathe new life into the game, as Psyonix hasn’t expressed an interest in developing a sequel. However, to that end, there is an argument to be made that Unreal Engine 6 could take away from the game’s more arcade-style.
As of the time of writing, it’s unclear when Unreal Engine 6 could be released. However, as spotted by @ShiinaBR, Epic Games could soon group Rocket League, Fortnite and more into one distinct hub.
