You Can Now Tap Your Amex Card on More Transit Systems Across Canada

If you’re an American Express cardholder who takes transit, getting around just got a little easier, especially for tourists.

BC Transit recently launched contactless payments across 30 transit systems in British Columbia, meaning riders can now tap their Amex card at fare readers instead of fumbling for cash or a separate transit card. The rollout covers select agencies across the province and is available to both locals and visitors.

This follows a similar move in Edmonton last year, when Edmonton Transit Service added tap-to-pay support for Amex cards. That includes not just Edmonton proper but also surrounding municipalities on the Arc system, including Beaumont, Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, St. Albert, and Strathcona County.

“As transit systems embrace contactless payments, we are ensuring Cardmembers can tap and ride with ease,” said Kerri-Ann Santaguida, Vice President and General Manager of Merchant Services at Amex Canada, in a statement on Thursday. “Expanding tap to pay is all about making daily commutes faster and more seamless.”

Amex cardholders can already tap to pay on a growing number of transit systems across the country, including 10 agencies in the Greater Toronto Area through PRESTO and TransLink in Vancouver.

For a full list of where your Amex card is accepted across Canada, transit riders are being told to check out the American Express Maps tool.
