This Tesla Just Drove Itself From Vancouver to Halifax Without Anyone Touching the Wheel

Three Tesla fans just drove across all of Canada without touching the wheel once, leveraging the latest version of the company’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) tech, version 14.3.3 on a new Model 3.

David Moss and Spencer from the U.S., plus Devin Olsen from Langley (BC), left Horseshoe Bay Terminal in Vancouver on Monday and pulled into the Tesla Showroom in Halifax four days and 21 hours later, covering a whopping 6,051 kilometres (3,760 miles) entirely on Tesla FSD. A public real-time tracker confirmed zero disengagements the whole way, including navigating into Supercharger parking lots.

Olsen said the trip was a major milestone for self-driving technology. “Canada threw just about everything it had at us along the way… construction, animals on the road, poor weather, bad drivers, etc – and we still managed to pull it off. This is a major milestone in autonomy and will hopefully help prove to people where we actually are today with regard to self-driving cars.”

The drive got noticed inside Tesla too. Ashok Elluswamy, who heads up Autopilot and FSD development, congratulated the team. Max de Zegher, Tesla’s Senior Director of Charging, pointed out that the Trans-Canada Supercharger route has been open since 2019 and just got its first fully autonomous run. Tesla’s own account summed it up simply: coast to coast, 6,051 kilometres, zero human input.

Kudos to these guys for taking on this challenge, which is definitely a new milestone for self-driving tech. Now that’s also a lot of fast food along the way.
