Meta’s Threads Surpasses 500 Million Monthly Active Users
Meta has announced that Threads has now crossed the 500 million monthly active users mark, while rolling out a major algorithmic feed control tool called “Your Algo.”
The achievement arrives just ahead of the platform’s third anniversary, solidifying its position as a massive force in the real-time social media landscape and a formidable competitor to Elon Musk’s X.
When Threads first launched, its explosive initial growth was heavily fueled by Meta’s existing ecosystem, allowing users to instantly port over their Instagram follower networks. Critics wondered if the app would suffer from low user retention once the initial hype faded. However, Meta’s latest data suggests that user behavior is changing significantly.
Growth is becoming organic, with a rising number of users launching Threads directly as a standalone destination rather than clicking through promotional teasers embedded in Instagram or Facebook feeds.
To celebrate the half-billion user milestone, Meta is deploying a highly requested content control feature called “Your Algo.” The tool is designed to give users direct, private control over what they see in their main feeds without requiring them to publicly post to signal their interests to the recommendation engine.
Through a centralized management hub, users can explicitly state whether they want to see more or less content related to specific topics. Crucially, these preferences are temporary rather than permanent fixtures. Users can set their algorithmic adjustments to last for a duration of one, three, or seven days. The flexibility allows people to filter out spoilers or intense news cycles during major events without permanently altering their long-term content preferences.
“Your Algo” is initially launching for users in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.
