Freedom Mobile Slams Rogers, Bell and Telus Over New Junk Fees

Freedom Mobile has launched a new campaign targeting Canada’s major telecom carriers, accusing Rogers, Bell, and Telus of finding ways to charge subscribers extra despite recent regulatory changes.

The carrier launched a dedicated campaign page on its website asking, “What The Fees?”, to call out its incumbent competitors directly. Freedom Mobile said that when the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission stepped in to protect consumers, the Big 3 quickly found workarounds.

“Hey Big Wireless! Seriously, what the fees? The CRTC mandated the elimination of junk fee charges, removing the financial impact to switching providers. Big Wireless? They responded by introducing new or different fees in their place. We know what’s fair. It’s time to switch,” says the Freedom website.

“On June 12, 2026, the CRTC, Canada’s telecom regulator, banned activation and modification fees (junk fees),” the company stated on its website. “The rule exists specifically so Canadians can switch phone carriers without being financially penalized. Big Wireless response? They introduced new or different junk fees in their place!”

The CRTC introduced the ban across Canada to prevent carriers from slapping fees on subscribers who choose to switch carriers or change their wireless plans.

Freedom Mobile explained its different approach compared to rivals, touting that simple pricing should be the standard across the country.

“When the CRTC set new rules for Canadian wireless, we followed them. No new activation fees, no modification fees,” Freedom Mobile stated, adding that “fair pricing isn’t complicated.”

To back up its claims, Freedom Mobile posted direct links on its campaign page to enforcement letters sent by the CRTC to Rogers, Bell, and Telus about their compliance with the June decision.

The CRTC is questioning Telus over its SIM card charges, Rogers over its $40 device fee and shipping fees, and Bell over its new $40 device fee as well. All three carriers have told the CRTC they are within their rights to charge these fees. The CRTC recently said carriers still charging fees might face fines up to $10 million.

“Our customers should know exactly what they’re paying, with nothing added along the way. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to, and we think it’s the one Canadians deserve,” said Jean B. Péladeau, Senior Vice-President and Chief Marketing Officer, Freedom Mobile, in a statement to iPhone in Canada on Monday.
