Rockstar Games has finally addressed the wave of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay footage that’s been flooding social media for over a week, and the studio isn’t happy about it.
In a statement posted Wednesday morning, the company said the leaks have been “heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time.”
Rockstar apologized for how long the whole thing has taken, from finishing the game to sharing official gameplay, and said it’s “nearly there!”
There’s no mention of the leaks, but parent company Take-Two Interactive had already quietly subpoenaed Discord and Microsoft seeking chat logs and account information to track down the source (someone’s going to jail). The clips have been circulating since August 18 from a source calling itself CyberLeek.
Rockstar confirmed the extended look at GTA 6 goes ahead as planned. “We are very excited for everyone to see the extended look tomorrow,” the statement reads. “It has taken longer than we wanted to get it ready, but as with everything we do, we know we need to exceed your expectations, and we are determined to deliver at the level you expect and deserve.”
The showcase airs exclusively on Netflix on Thursday, August 27 at noon PT/3pm ET, and hits the Rockstar Games YouTube channel six hours later for anyone who doesn’t subscribe. So it looks like your Netflix subscription is giving you a perk here by six hours.
GTA 6 is still coming November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. It’s been a long time coming and it should end the “___ before GTA 6 memes” once and for all.
Even with leaked footage, GTA 6 is likely going to be the best-selling video game of all time. Who’s eagerly waiting for November 19?
