Apple has officially taken the wraps off its latest flagship smartphones, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The devices introduce a new variable aperture camera, that mimics traditional DSLRs, faster internal cooling, a smaller Dynamic Island, and a deep burgundy colour option.
New Fusion Camera with Variable Aperture
The main headline for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup is the upgraded 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera. Apple has added a physical variable aperture to the primary lens. Instead of relying purely on software tricks or digital processing to simulate background blur, the mechanical shutter physical opening expands or contracts to control physical light intake.
Photographers can open the aperture wider in dim environments to gather more natural light without introducing digital noise. Conversely, narrowing the opening allows for crisp, deep landscape shots where both the foreground and background stay sharply in focus.
Thermal Upgrades and the A20 Pro Chip
Both devices run on Apple’s latest internal silicon, the A20 Pro processor. Performance updates on flagship smartphones often get bottlenecked by heat throttling during long gaming sessions or 4K video recording. To combat this issue, Apple has engineered a dedicated vapor chamber cooling system inside the chassis.
This vapor chamber distributes internal heat across a wider surface area, allowing the A20 Pro to run at peak processing speeds for much longer periods without dropping frame rates or dimming the display brightness.
Smaller Dynamic Island and New Colour Options
On the front display, the pill-shaped screen cut-out known as the Dynamic Island has been shrunk down. By shrinking the physical area taken up by the front camera and sensor hardware, users gain additional usable screen space at the top of the display without losing face identification biometric security.
Apple has also introduced a deep burgundy shade to the Pro lineup. This new tone joins three returning core colors:
“With iPhone 18 Pro, we’ve made advancements to the areas our users care about most: camera, performance, battery, and intelligence,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.
Pre-orders for both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max start on Saturday, September 12, with official store availability and customer shipping beginning Friday, September 18.
