Here’s How Much Apple is Paying Samsung for iPhone Duo’s Display

Reports from supply chain insider Instant Digital reveal that Apple has struck an exclusive three-year contract with Samsung for the iPhone Duo’s folding display. Under this deal, it is estimated that Apple will be paying $250 to Samsung for every single display panel (via MacRumors).

When a single element eats up that much of the manufacturing budget, it shows how difficult and pricey it remains to produce flexible screens at scale.

The high price tag stems from the specialized technology packed inside the panel. The iPhone Duo uses Samsung’s advanced M16 OLED material set. This generation of display tech brings major upgrades over older OLED screens, including noticeably higher brightness, richer color reproduction, longer overall lifespan, and lower power consumption.

Building a panel that folds completely flat without breaking or showing an ugly crease requires precision engineering. Apple chose Samsung because few other suppliers can meet its strict quality control standards for such a high-stakes launch.

This supply arrangement creates a fascinating dynamic between two industry rivals. While Apple and Samsung fight fiercely for market share in store aisles, their supply chain operations remain deeply intertwined. Samsung gets a massive, reliable revenue stream for the next three years, while Apple gets access to top-tier display technology it cannot make on its own.

For buyers, the heavy component cost will inevitably trickle down to retail prices and out-of-warranty repair bills. Replacing an advanced OLED screen of this size will be an expensive fix if users drop their phone without extra coverage.

Apple introduced the iPhone Duo earlier this week, presenting a fresh form factor that merges two active screen areas into a fluid folding body. When opened fully, the device turns into the thinnest phone Apple has ever produced.
