GM Welcomes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto Back in Major UI Overhaul

General Motors has unveiled a completely redesigned cabin user interface for its upcoming vehicle lineup, bringing a surprising shift in direction i.e. deep integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Back in 2023, GM sparked widespread backlash from car buyers and tech enthusiasts after announcing plans to phase out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across its new electric vehicles and future products. At the time, GM argued that a built-in infotainment system developed alongside Google would offer better battery preconditioning and route planning.

Now, GM’s latest software architecture embraces phone projection rather than pushing it away. The company confirmed that updated versions of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will run directly alongside native vehicle applications, offering drivers a hybrid approach.

Instead of taking over the entire dashboard screen or hiding behind separate menus, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will display inside a large card window within GM’s new multi-view home screen layout.

This side-by-side design allows drivers to run their preferred smartphone navigation or media apps on one part of the display while simultaneously monitoring native truck controls, such as live trailering metrics, climate settings, or vehicle diagnostic data. Drivers can move between phone-projected software and native vehicle features without losing sight of either interface.

The refreshed software platform will debut on GM’s flagship light-duty pickup trucks, the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and 2027 GMC Sierra, before expanding across gas, diesel, and electric models across the broader portfolio.

GM confirmed that the new software architecture relies on over-the-air updates, enabling the company to roll out feature tweaks, design refinements, and performance upgrades throughout the vehicle’s lifespan.
