YouTuber Tests Upgrading 256GB iPhone 18 Pro Storage to 2TB [VIDEO]

Repair expert and YouTuber DirectorFeng has recently published a video, testing whether the new iPhone 18 Pro’s 256GB base storage can be upgraded to 1TB or 2TB using custom NAND flash chips.

Apple charges a massive premium for storage upgrades on its flagship hardware. The step up from the base 256GB model to the top-tier 2TB iPhone 18 Pro costs an extra $1,200, effectively doubling the starting price of the device.

In older mobile devices, upgrading the storage was a matter of desoldering the original NAND memory chip, flashing the proprietary system configuration data onto a larger flash chip, and resoldering it back onto the logic board. Over time, however, hardware vendors have layered on anti-tamper security features, hardware encryption, and strict component serialization.

DirectorFeng’s test highlights the persistent conflict between independent repair capabilities and locked-down consumer electronics. Even when a technician successfully completes the physical microsoldering process and mounts a 1TB or 2TB chip cleanly, system-level security protections present an immediate challenge.

Apple’s Secure Enclave and hardware serialization policies verify the exact cryptographic signatures attached to internal components. If the board detects an unverified or unmatched NAND configuration during startup, the device fails system calibration or refuses to complete the iOS restore process.

While third-party repair shops continuously develop specialized programmer tools and custom software patches to circumvent these hardware locks, the video serves as a reminder of how difficult Apple has made unauthorized storage upgrades.
